Frequently Asked Questions About Root Canal Treatment

A standard root canal treatment is completed in three key stages:

  1. Cleaning and shaping the root canals
The dentist removes infected or damaged pulp, disinfects the canals, and shapes them to prepare for filling.
  2. Filling the canals
The cleaned canals are filled with a biocompatible material (usually gutta-percha) to prevent reinfection.
  3. Restoring the tooth
The tooth is sealed with a temporary or permanent filling. In most cases, a dental crown is recommended afterwards to strengthen and protect the tooth long-term.

After root canal treatment, you may experience mild tenderness for a few days as the surrounding tissue heals. This is normal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

Your dentist will schedule a follow-up appointment to check healing and place a permanent filling or crown. A crown is often recommended to protect the tooth, as it may become more brittle after the procedure.

You may experience some mild irritation or ache. If so, over-the-counter medications will relieve the symptoms.

Molars, especially upper molars, are generally considered the most challenging for root canal treatment.
This is because they often have:

  • More root canals (sometimes 3–4 or more)
  • Curved or narrow canals
  • Complex root anatomy

Experienced dentists and endodontists use advanced imaging and technology to successfully treat even the most complex teeth.

Your dentist will always attempt to save your tooth when possible, especially since root canal treatment has a high success rate of 90%. Saving your natural tooth can prevent bite problems from your teeth shifting position, difficulty eating, and loss of jawbone volume and density.

Although the advancements in dentistry are incredible, extracting, and then replacing a tooth is more expensive than a root canal.

You are completely numb when you have a root canal treatment so the process should be painless. It is quite common to have a little discomfort for a week after. Pain relief could involve taking paracetamol (dependent on your medical history).

Most patients recover quickly after root canal treatment. You can typically return to normal activities the same day or the next day.

Tenderness usually improves within 24–72 hours, and the area fully settles within a week.

A final crown or restoration is placed once the tooth has healed, ensuring long-term strength and protection.

After a root canal treatment on a back tooth the tooth is significantly weakened so it is often necessary to place a supporting structure in the form of a crown or an onlay to stop the tooth fracturing.

The best way is to go to the dentist to have an examination. In some cases pain can mean you need a root canal treatment, however sometimes a tooth can be completely asymptomatic yet need a root canal treatment.

The Cosmetic Dental Gallery operates two convenient locations for root canal treatment. Learn more about our services at our Greenwich dental practice and our Battersea dental practice.
