Frequently Asked Questions About Preventative Dental Care

Preventive dentistry is essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums long-term. It focuses on stopping problems before they develop — helping you avoid tooth decay, gum disease, dental emergencies, and costly treatments in the future.

It includes regular check-ups, hygiene visits, fluoride treatments, dental sealants, and personalised advice on at-home oral care.

By identifying early signs of oral issues and improving daily habits, preventive dentistry keeps your smile healthier, stronger, and more resilient at every stage of life.

Preventive dental care includes routine check-ups, professional hygiene cleanings, fluoride treatments, dental sealants, oral cancer screenings, and personalised oral hygiene advice. We may also recommend sports mouthguards or nightguards if you grind your teeth. Together, these treatments help protect your teeth and gums from future damage.

Most patients benefit from seeing the dentist every six months. However, if you are prone to gum disease, tooth decay, or wear braces or aligners, we may recommend visits every 3–4 months. Regular appointments help catch problems early and maintain long-term oral health.

It’s common to get build ups of calculus (tartar) around your teeth which you will not be able to remove at home. This build up can lead to gum disease. A hygienist can clean this off with special instruments and give you advice on how to decrease the rate of this build up.

No! Brushing your teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste will manually remove plaque and bacteria from your teeth to reduce the chances of dental decay and gum disease. Mouthwash does not do this!

A fluoride containing mouthwash can benefit you if used after a meal because it gives you an application of fluoride and neutralises the acids caused from bacteria and food. You should not rinse your mouth with water or mouth rinse after brushing your teeth as you are just rinsing off the high fluoride amount in toothpaste which has a topical benefit.

Yes! An appropriate level of fluoride is important and will increase your resistance to dental decay.

Heavily coloured foods and drinks, like tea, coffee, red wine, curry, turmeric etc. Smoking is a big no no!

Patients with sensitive teeth benefit from the Aquacare® system. The gentle stream of water and finely milled cleaning powder doesn’t stress the teeth. The powder is so fine that it fills in the tubules in your tooth’s surface, helping to eliminate sensitivity.

Your hygienist can clean your teeth in about 30 minutes using Aquacare®.

Aquacare® is very safe to use on any dental prosthetic or restoration, including a crown or bridge, and veneers.

Aquacare® can remove superficial stains on your teeth caused by smoking, red wine, or other pigmented and dyed food and beverages.

However, if you have ingrained stains, teeth whitening treatment may be a good solution for brightening your smile.
